Use of Remote Patient Monitoring for Pregnancy Care

As Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) is gaining popularity in various specialty healthcare areas, it is now finding its applications in the practice of obstetrics. RPM can be especially helpful for pregnant women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes and/or gestational hypertension. High Blood Pressure in pregnancy commonly known as gestational hypertension can lead to dangerous complications like eclampsia, preeclampsia, stroke, and preterm delivery. Hence, it is crucial to regularly monitor blood pressure, but that can prove tedious for pregnant women with work and other responsibilities.

Frequent visits to the clinic can also become challenging for pregnant women who develop gestational diabetes. This also requires close monitoring of blood glucose levels, exercise, nutritional tracking, and medication/insulin if needed. Thus, RPM helps in making pregnancy care less cumbersome for expectant mothers. By using smart devices for collecting and transmitting data to health practitioners in real-time, adherence to treatment regimens becomes more effective.
