There is noted improvement in rural infrastructure and some state governments have implemented innovative solutions to address the problems with healthcare. However, India needs dedicated resources and training facilities for the rural populations. Following are some suggestions that can reshape primary care in rural India:
– Improve the utilization of Primary Health Centers (PHCs) by recruiting rural medical assistants, a model that has been successful in remote areas of Chhattisgarh. It is observed that nonphysician providers can deliver good quality care if they are supported, supervised, and well-skilled. A team approach also worked in providing culturally sensitive care wherein the team consisted of a physician and nonphysicians (community health workers, nurses, etc.)
– Train people in rural health facilities to provide a range of care using a generalist approach. They should be adept at clinical skills, leadership skills, and social skills.
– Health practitioners must be trained to understand community needs and actively engage them.
