Patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s often suffer from forgetfulness and tend to wander outside of the house. A new IoT-based device that helps in keeping them out of harm’s way is Smart Sole. These are GPS-fitted insoles that can be tucked into shoes discreetly and used with different pairs. The soles run on a rechargeable battery, and some even include emergency features like a fall detector or a panic button.
The aim of Smart Soles is to keep a person safe without taking away their independence to move around. If a person has walked away alone, their location can be located via the app connected to the insoles. A caregiver will be notified as soon as the patient walks out of a defined area. Becoming disoriented or lost is a serious concern faced by people with cognitive disorders and their loved ones. Hence, using Smart Soles can provide reassurance and even save lives.
