From Prompts to Patterns: The Real Path to Scalable AI Systems

1 Mins read

A few months ago, a startup founder showed me a Notion page with 700+ prompts.
He said, “This is our IP.”

I paused. Because that’s like saying your company’s value lies in its to-do list.
Here’s the truth: Prompt libraries don’t scale.
They’re just duct tape: clever, temporary, and fragile.

Each model update breaks half of them. Each new use case spawns ten more copies.
Over time, what started as “efficiency” turns into prompt debt.

What teams actually need aren’t prompt lists. They need pattern libraries and evals.

→ Pattern libraries capture reusable logic, the why behind what works, not just the words.
→ Evals measure outcomes, because if you can’t test it, you can’t trust it.

When you migrate from prompts to patterns to evals, you stop chasing hacks and start building systems.

And that’s when AI stops being a playground tool and starts becoming enterprise infrastructure.
